Requirements for a minor taking the Basic RiderCourse

You must be 15 years of age or older on the first day of class start in order to take the Basic RiderCourse. If you are less than 18 years of age, you are also required to have:

  1. Parental Permission: Minors must have a parent's or legal guardian's permission to attend the course. Such permission is considered granted when the parent signs the course waiver. The course waiver is provided by the RiderCoach Instructor the day of the course, prior to class start, or can be filled out, signed, and notarized ahead of time. Please email us at customerservice@gomotoschool.com to request this form if you would like to sign and have it notarized before class. The minor can then bring the completed, signed, and notarized form with him/her to submit to the RiderCoach on the day of the course, prior to class start.
  2. Consent for Medical Treatment of a Minor: Minors must also have a parent's or legal guardian's signature on this form in order to take the course. As with the course waiver, the parent or legal guardian will be provided with this form to sign in front of the RiderCoach instructor the day of the course, prior to class start, or can fill it out, and have it signed and notarized ahead of time. Please email us at customerservice@gomotoschool.com to request this form if you would like to have it signed and notarized before class. The minor can then bring the completed, signed, and notarized form with him/her to submit to the RiderCoach on the day of the course, prior to class start.
  3. Completion of Classroom Phase of Driver Education: If you're under 18, you must have completed at least the classroom phase of a state-approved driver education course before enrolling in a motorcycle safety course.

    However, if you already hold a valid Texas learner's permit or driver's license, you've already met this requirement — no additional proof of the classroom phase is needed.

Requirements to Obtain a Texas Motorcycle License for a Minor:

If you are less than 18 years old, these are the steps required for you to get a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license:

  1. Be at least 15 years old. You will be restricted to riding motorcycles 250cc or less. This restriction is lifted automatically once you turn 16.
  2. Provide proof of identity and meet the REAL ID requirements (https://www.dps.texas.gov/apps/DriverLicense/RealID/)
  3. Visit Driver License Services - Appointments to schedule an appointment at your local driver license office. Minors are required to bring a parent or guardian,
  4. Complete the application, available online or at the driver license office,
  5. Provide Motorcycle Safety Course (MSB-8) completion certificate,
  6. Present a:
    • Class C Provisional License, or
    • Class C Learner License and a DE-964/DEE-964 showing completion of a 24-hour driver education course or completion certificate,
  7. Provide a high school diploma, its equivalent (GED) or the Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE Form) (Requirements above)
  8. Pay the application fee.
  9. Provide Biometric Information (signature and thumbprints)
  10. Have your picture taken.
  11. Verify information is correct on the temporary license before your leave.
  12. Pass the Motorcycle Riding Test: Minors applying for a motorcycle license will need to take a motorcycle riding test. This is not necessary for individuals 18 years or older. You will need to supply the motorcycle, as well as a vehicle and a driver for the examiner to ride as a passenger while you are being observed and tested. Make sure that both the motorcycle and vehicle used for the test are properly registered and insured.

Once you have completed all these steps, congratulations! You will be a licensed motorcycle operator!
