Requirements for a minor taking the Basic RiderCourse

You must be 15 years of age or older on the first day of class start in order to take the Basic RiderCourse. If you are less than 18 years of age, you are also required to have:

1. Parental Permission: Minors must have a parent's or legal guardian's permission to attend the course. Such permission is considered granted when the parent signs the course waiver. The course waiver is provided by the RiderCoach Instructor the day of the course, prior to class start, or can be filled out, signed, and notarized ahead of time. The minor can then bring the completed, signed, and notarized form with him/her to submit to the RiderCoach on the day of the course, prior to class start.
2. Consent for Medical Treatment of a Minor: Minors must also have a parent's or legal guardian's signature on this form in order to take the course. As with the course waiver, the parent or legal guardian will be provided with this form to sign in front of the RiderCoach instructor the day of the course, prior to class start, or can fill it out, and have it signed and notarized ahead of time. The minor can then bring the completed, signed, and notarized form with him/her to submit to the RiderCoach on the day of the course, prior to class start.
3. Completion of Classroom Phase of Driver Education: You need to have completed the classroom phase of a driver education course before a motorcycle safety course can be taken. (The behind-the-wheel part of driver education course is not needed to take the motorcycle safety course. You may present form DE-964 as proof of Classroom Phase completion. This is the minimum requirement, so if you already have a Driver's License Learner's permit or a Driver License, you can present them instead.

Requirements to Obtain a Texas Motorcycle License for a Minor:

If you are less than 18 years old, these are the steps required for you to get a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license:

1. Be at least 15 years old. You will be restricted to riding motorcycles 250cc or less. This restriction is lifted automatically once you turn 16.
2. Provide proof of identity and verification of U.S. Citizenship or lawful presence, and proof of social security number.
3. Have a class C learner's license or Driver's License, or you may present form DE-964 as proof of Classroom Phase completion. The Behind the wheel part of a driver education course is not needed to apply for a class M (motorcycle) endorsement.
4. Present your Motorcycle Operator Certificate of Completion Card (MSB-8). This is the Certificate you receive once you successfully complete our Basic RiderCourse.
5. Submit either a completed Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE) (CDD-104) form, or a letter from your school administrator.
6. Complete the required application forms and fees, as well as obtain a parental authorization signature.
7. As of January 12, 2015, you will not need to take a written test to obtain your endorsement. If your licensing office is requiring you to complete one, please ask them to reference policy change effective January 12, 2015.
8. Pass the Motorcycle Riding Test: Minors applying for a motorcycle license will need to take a motorcycle riding test. This is not necessary for individuals 18 years or older. You will need to schedule this test at your local driver's license office. For the road test, you will need to supply the motorcycle, as well as a vehicle and a driver for the examiner to ride as a passenger while you are being observed and tested. Make sure that both the motorcycle and vehicle used for the test are properly registered and insured.

Once you have completed all these steps, congratulations! You will be a licensed motorcycle operator!
